Fin Rot
Fin rot is a the result of a bacterial infection most commonly brought on by poor water quality and stress. It can also be caused by an infected bite wound. Fin rot makes the fins of a fish look like they're rotting away or falling off. There is sometimes a white fungus on the edge of the fins along with red coloration throughout the fins.
The best way to prevent fin rot is to keep the tank clean. Poor water quality causes stress on a fish and weakens the immune system, hindering their natural ability to fight off infection and diseases. A tank that is too small can also be a cause of unneeded stress to a fish.
The first step in curing a fish of fin rot is to correct the problem. If the tank is under 30 gallons per puffer then it's time for an upgrade. It may also be a good idea to do water changes more frequently.
Frequent water changes and perfect water conditions are vital throughout the duration of the treatment. Most of the time this is enough to cure the fish of the infection and start fin regrowth. If the infection is severe medication can be added to prevent it from spreading more. Medications like tetracycline, and melafix are commonly used in treating fin rot. Since puffers are scaleless fish medication should be used with extreme caution. Seek advice before treating a puffer for any illness.
